JOB TITLE FIREARMS EXAMINER

ANNUAL SALARY $84,606 - $105,131

DUTIES A Firearms Examiner is a civilian employee of the Police Department who examines and identifies firearms, weapons, cartridges, bullets, and similar evidence in criminal investigations; collects physical evidence at crime scenes; analyzes and reconstructs the events occurring at crime scenes; conducts complete scientific tests of firearms evidence using laboratory equipment; prepares documentation and reports on the results of the collection and analysis of evidence; testifies in court concerning the results of examinations; provides expert testimony on general firearms capability and examination methodology; and does related work.

REQUIREMENTS
  1. Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university; and
  2. Four years of full-time paid experience in examining and identifying firearms, weapons, ammunition, and similar evidence, including court experience as an examiner of firearms evidence in a criminal proceeding; and
  3. Submission of a Firearms Examiner Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire and the City application at the time of filing.
A major in physical or natural science is desired, but not required.
A valid California driver’s license may be required prior to appointment.

Once you submit your on-line application and it appears it meets the bulletin requirements, you will be immediately directed to the on-line Training and Experience Questionnaire for Firearms Examiner. At that time, you must follow the prompts and save the Questionnaire to a hard drive or floppy diskette. You must complete the Questionnaire during that initial session and submit it with the application form. You cannot be considered a candidate in the examination unless both the City application form and the Training and Experience Questionnaire are complete and submitted together.

The examination score will be based entirely on an evaluation of the candidate’s overall qualifications. The evaluation, conducted by a panel of subject matter experts, based on job-related criteria, will consist of a review of the candidate’s employment application, including background and training, and the information contained in the Firearms Examiner Supplemental Training and Experience Questionnaire.

  3. You may take this examination once every 180 calendar days. Your name may be removed from the open competitive eligible list after 180 calendar days.
  4. Some positions may require a valid California drivers license prior to appointment. Applicants will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if within the past 36 months they were convicted of a major moving violation, such as driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and may be disqualified if there are three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months.
  5. A final score of 70% is required to be placed on the eligible list.
