JOB TITLE POLYGRAPH EXAMINER

MONTHLY SALARY $3889 - $7414
range for the four pay grades in this class are $3889 to $4834; $4931 to $6127; $5189 to $6447; and $5968 to $7414 a month. Appointments are expected to be made to pay grades I or II.

DUTIES

Polygraph Examiners appointed to pay grade I will receive intensive on-the-job and formal training as a Polygraph Examiner.

NOTE: Pay grade I is a trainee level. A Polygraph Examiner appointed to this pay grade must qualify for appointment to pay grade II within eighteen months of employment by successful completion of the training program.

Polygraph Examiners administer polygraph examinations using computerized polygraph instruments; and, as appropriate, interview and interrogate suspects, victims, witnesses and other persons involved in City related investigations; prepare written reports in order to document polygraph examination questions and results, and testify in court as an expert witness.

Candidates may be subject to working evening, weekend, and holiday shifts on an on-call basis.


REQUIREMENTS

  1. Graduation from an approved Polygraph School accredited by the American Polygraph Association or completion of a U.S. Government Polygraph Training Program; and

  2. Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units in a recognized college or university; and

  3. Submission of a completed Training and Experience Questionnaire for Polygraph Examiner and the City application at the time of filing.

  4. General employment resumes will not meet this requirement. Candidate's application and supplement which clearly indicate they do not meet the above requirements will not be accepted.

    NOTE: A valid California driver's license may be required prior to appointment.

    Prior law enforcement experience is desired but not required.

    Applicants who have the ability to speak a language other than English should indicate this in Box 36 on the application. Spanish is especially desired.

Evaluation of Overall Qualifications. . . . . . . . 100%

The examination will score will be based entirely on an evaluation of the candidate's overall qualifications. The evaluation, conducted by a panel of subject matter experts, based on job-related criteria, will consist of a review of the candidate's employment application, including background and training; and the information presented in the Training and Experience Questionnaire for Polygraph Examiner.

  4. A candidate may take this examination once a year (365 days). Names may be removed from the open competitive eligible list after 180 days.
  5. In bilingually authorized positions, a 2.75% bonus is paid for fluent conversational ability in the necessary language. A 5.5% bonus may be paid for the ability to write and interpret the language in addition to speaking it.
