JOB TITLE SENIOR ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING TECHNICIAN

ANNUAL SALARY $55,540 - $69,008
The salary for most positions in the Department of Water and Power is $68,277 to $95,526. The salary for positions in other City departments is $55,540 to $69,008.

DUTIES A Senior Architectural Drafting Technician assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of drafting technicians engaged in the preparation of architectural and structural drawings and plans which are used by various workforces; works closely with clients, union representatives and other department agencies; uses Computer Aided Drafting Equipment (CAD); performs drafting work on the more difficult projects; applies sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work force; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Three years of full-time paid experience in architectural or structural drafting in a class at least at the level of Architectural Drafting Technician.
  2. Candidates who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.

APPLICATION DEADLINE The written test for Senior Architectural Drafting Technician will be held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. Candidates who successfully complete the written test will be interviewed at a later date in Los Angeles.

Candidates whose City applications are received and approved by the 1st Thursday of the month will be scheduled to take the written test on the 3rd Saturday of the month.

NOTES:


  1. The written test will be administered in a single half-day session. Candidates will be notified later by mail of the time and location of the written test, which will be held in Los Angeles.
  2. Candidates whose test date falls on a holiday will be notified by mail of the date, time, and location of the written test. Additional test days may be required if a large number of applications are received.
  3. Filing may be closed without prior notice after a sufficient number of applications are received. For administrative purposes, filing will close periodically and reopen the following workday.

The written test will consist of multiple choice questions in which candidates may be examined for knowledge of: potential problem areas in construction related to details appearing in elevations, sections, details, and plans; drafting conventions, symbols, and details used in different types of drawings; arithmetic, algebra, and geometry and its application to structural steel drawing details and dimensioning, and reinforced concrete construction; the ability to interpret architectural/structural construction documents; utilize, develop and implement computer aided drafting (CAD) software systems; estimate time and personnel required to complete projects; interpret National and City Building Codes; CAL/OSHA Guide, Architectural Barriers Laws, and the Interpretive Manual; prepare clear and accurate written materials, utilizing proper grammar and punctuation; deal tactfully, persuasively, and effectively with other employees and contractors; supervisory principles and practices, including Equal Employment Opportunity; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

All candidates who receive a passing score on the qualifying multiple-choice written test will be invited to participate in the interview. The examination score will be based entirely on an evaluation of the candidates personal and professional qualifications by interview. In the interview, emphasis will be placed on the adequacy of the candidates background, work experience, and personal qualifications as they have prepared the candidate to perform drafting of the more difficult projects, supervise the work of drafting technicians, communicate orally in a clear, concise, and understandable manner, deal tactfully and effectively with others, and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Passing Score for the Qualifying Written Test

The passing score for the qualifying written test will de determined by Personnel Department staff after the written test is administered. Consideration will be given to the number of candidates taking the test and the existing and anticipated number of vacancies, such that there are a sufficient number of eligibles on the list to satisfy current and future vacancies for the next two years. Therefore, the passing score for the qualifying multiple-choice written test may be set either above or below 70%.


NOTES

  1. This examination is based on a validation study, and as provided by Civil Service Rule 4.20, the written test will not be subject to candidate inspection.
  2. You make take the test only once every 365 days during the administration of this examination. Your name may be removed from the open competitive list after six months.
  3. Applications are accepted subject to review to ensure that minimum qualifications are met. Candidates may be disqualified at any time if it is determined that they do not possess the minimum qualifications stated on this bulletin.
  4. Seniority credit at the rate of 0.25% of a point for each year of continuous service will be added to the weighted test score of each candidate.
  5. A final average score of 70% is required to be placed on the eligible list.
  6. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to file on a promotional basis.
  7.   8. Some positions may require a valid California drivers license prior to appointment.
